Stephen Murray Update thurs 28/6/07

Postby murray » Thu Jun 28, 2007 3:59 pm

Yesterday was quite a big day for everyone. The general surgeon arrived to discuss his tracheostomy operation which should hopefully be a temporary measure rather than a permanent fixture (amazing). This procesure takes the respirator out of his mouth and into his throat relieving pressure off his voicebox. They will also take out the feed tube from his mouth and insert this into his stomach. This leaves his mouth free and should be a lot more comfortable for him. It should also enable him to mouth words over the coming weeks, something which has been really frustrating for him. They hope to do this today.

Today, they also plan to operate to put a filter into his vena cava vein to prevent the build up of blood clots along with an MRI to check on the status of his neck.

Quote of the day came from the director of the neurotrauma team.

"he's not going to end up like christopher reeve"

This, as you can imagine, was a massive boost for everyone. There are plenty of rumours still flying round that he'll be riding by xmas, he's gonna be able to walk etc. etc. The only thing to listen to is this blog/update. He has sustained a life altering injury and we have come to terms with the fact that he may never walk again. The most we could ever hope for at this moment is for some use of his upper body and the ability to breath on his own in the future.

He did also manage to tell my mam "happy birthday" for today!

Last night his friends from england, scott edgworth and marco delisola flew in which put a smile on his face.

The comments on ths site (and others) and emails we have received are so comforting to us, and they will be even more comforting to stephen over the coming weeks when we are able to read them out to him.

Thanks again.

Haley's Mom in Greenville NC

Postby glorylin » Thu Jun 28, 2007 6:09 pm

Haley is praying for Stephen everyday and so are the people at our church here in Greenville NC.

This is kinda a practical message

Please make sure that he is on a good air mattress like a KinAir. My daughter Haley is paralyzed and the only pressure sores she ever got were iwhen she goes to the hospital!!! Watch his butt, elbows and ankles for any redness..that is a stage 1 and is easily healed in a couple of hours. It is a stage 2 when it is red and does not blanche (turning white when you press on it. Stage 3 and 4 are TROUBLE!!!!

By the way, Christopher Reeves died from complications of a pressure sore. They are 100% preventable with the right mattress, pillows, and thrning

Sorry to hear about what happened mate, never met your bruv but as a fellow northerner as fellow bike rider was gutted to read about what happened. A friend of mine had a massive crash on his MTB back end of last year up on the moors up in Northumberland. Was a helicopter job to get him out and he was in a coma for about six weeks with massive head injuries and a broken neck. He was revivied after stopping breathing several times, his body giving up but his mind wouldnt let go.
A couple of weeks ago he completed a 100km charity ride. It was one of the most amazing things I ve ever seen and an emotional occasion for us all. Ok we are all soft roadies but hey.
All the guys at fishers are thinking of you all and I got in touch with dave Young who has spread the word up north. Keep the Geordie fighting spirit alive.

All our love to the murrays

All our thoughths and hope are with you at this difficult time you are going though we are are thinking of stephen all the time and wishing you all on.

Ive seen you grow from a fast young racer into a excellent and respected rider. When i came to HB into 2000 you were just making your way in dirt and started to raise the bar, i watched in orw when we road sheep we had some good times there in the clubs and riding street at night.

We had some battles on the track in master class and you seem to come out on top.

this is bigger time in your life when you can come out on top

Keep strong Stephen

All our love Matt, Hazel, Mark,Sue and Noel Barnard
