Stephen Murray Update 26/6/07

Postby murray » Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:50 pm

Hi,

Yesterday was a very up and down day. Just to let you know, stephen didn't have the 2nd operation yesterday due to another crisis case which required stephens neuro teams attention. Following this news, we were all given a huge boost by some news that stephen had some sensation in his backside. Typically, this was felt when a nurse touched his bum! This, along with some sensation i his right wrist and left shoulder gave everyone a huge lift.

However, he developed further complications later in the day with his breathing. His temparature was very high and his lungs were hardly working. They feared he may have developed blood clots in his lungs and so decided to do a cat scand along with some other tests. He was too sick to have the cat scan however, and so they decided to do a bronchoscopy. The results of this were that they found lots of crap in his lungs, but no blood clot. They believe that this is due to inhaling lots and lots of dust from digging and riding trails over many, many years. Sort of similar to that of a miner's lung.

He was due to have the postponed second operation this morning (7am) and doctors decide to assess his situation 1 hour prior to the operating time to see if he was strong enough to take the anaesthetic and come through the operation. Luckily, they decided he was fit enough to take it following his temperature dropping in the night and he is now 2 hours in to a 7 hour operation to further stabilise his broken 3,4 and 5th vertebrae.

This has been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster but we are optimistic that by the end of the week he will be more comfortable.

The support we have received is unbelievable and your messages on here are really comforting. He has been too sick for me to read these message out to him but i have told him some of the names that have been sending their regards and it makes him smile. Hopefully, towards the end of the week i will be able to print them all out and read them to him so please, if you haven't already done so, leave a message for him. Its much appreciated.

Thanks

Martin, Cynthia, Jeff, Melissa, Seth and Mason

The news seems to be getting better everyday in regards to the feelings he is getting back. I still cant believe it. Stephen you pushed dirt jumping so much with your huge tricks and racer style , and i feel proud to say i know you. I was there when you pulled your first truck driver at sheep hills in 99 and then watching you pulling double flips is mental! Theres very few people who i know has the desire to pull out of this and your one of them , you always were a fighter and im thinking of you mate.

Keep the good news coming, Martin.

It's really encouraging to hear Stephen's condition seems to be improving each day.

I hope today's operation goes well and Steve makes a full and speedy recovery.

It's amazing that someone has touched so many people. Although I've never met Stephen only seen him on the telly pulling mental tricks it as though I've known him for years.

Thanks Martin for keeping us informed and we wish you and your family the BEST.

Stephen, the Brit Britt's in Florida wish you a speedy recovery

Steve, you always inspired me the way you raced and pulling those 360's in squirt of dirt, and now you are an inspiration the way you are pulling through this. Keep strong, we are all thinking of you and your family. From the Gough's x

Steve

Just a note to say that we are all thinking about you and looking forward to you getting out and showing us some more of the dodgy American fashions that you appear to have picked up.

Be strong big man

On Dales site he mentions that martin is reading messages to steve and making him smile. It's a big lift to your moral to get messages from your freinds and peers. Some of the stuff that gets said can reach in and touch your heart. But the funny stuff is great to recieve as well. Laughter is the best medicine. Quick list of stuff that steve and martin might remember.
I bought a robinson frame and fork off steve at the slough brits 96 and got all stoked
Steve's first backflip at ipswich over the first set of the 4 pack.Got it on vid
Waiting for the sun to set behind the trees for peterborough kings of dirt.
Slough dirt jumps. By then steve was doing back flips in his sleep. Where as martin was falling asleep after his back flip .( In fact he was out cold)
Both of them giving me mad props at the euro's (valkenwsaard Holland 99). That was just in practice. Remember the spotty bike and square back wheel. I was feeling your BMX love that day for sure.
The worlds 99, and todd lyons backflip. Back to england and steve flipped mid moto at the next national in mansfield. A pro moto.
Bike show 2003ish. One nod from steve in the direction of security and i got a VIP pass. Stoked all over again.
2005ish at Tours indoor spectacular in france. Steve was flown in as the special guest rider and rocked the house. Us brits in the crowd felt like the comedian (pub landlord), Beautifull people from GREAT BRITAIN. GULP.
I could go on and on but i think i already have, so i will leave you with the first thing that came into my mind when i read what martin said about the dirt in steve's lungs.
You can take the boy out of the trails, but you can't take the trails out of the boy.

Martin, thank you so much for these updates - we are hanging on for the next one.

I couldn't believe it when Simon told me what had happened to Stephen last weekend. I don't think it actually sank in until Monday.

Stephen is one of the strongest people I know, and I know that he will pull through this - he's a fighter.

The fact that he is so physically fit is going to work in his favour - when Simon punctured his lung he was told it would take 3 weeks to heal. He had an x-ray a week later and the Doctor refused to believe he'd ever punctured his lung.

Get better Stephen, everyone's thinking about you and we are all with you and your family through this.

Love ya.

Hey Stephen

Its a long time since you where hacking around the NE regional races in your Kool Kit gear! Yes some of us still remember that, but theres so much more to remember!

You (along with Martin) brought style, dedication, determination, skill, smiles, fun and love to the BMX world and made it a better place to be.
Just your presence at the track/trails lifts people. Encouraging and advising riders both young and old.

So many messages of support and love for a great athlete.

Be strong Stephen, and those by your bedside.

Your from 'upt north', made from stong stuff!

Stephen,

I have not seen you in a long time. I met you when I used to visit my mom Penny Westman at Nirve... and many times since. I am so sorry to hear about your accident. My mom emailed me this morning the news. My mom, Penny Westman wanted me to tell you she keeps you in her thoughts and prayers, as do I. You are such a talented rider... and a risk taker...many have learned so much from you. You are so amazing to watch. If you need anything, my mom said she will nurse you back to health any time you need! Take care and God Bless.

Always,

Jaime and Penny Westman
